MALE

Michael Brinegar, Columbus North freshman swimmer

Brinegar won the state championship in the 500-yard freestyle in a school-record 4 minutes, 24.92 seconds. He also finished eighth in the 200 freestyle and anchored the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams to 11th- and 12th-place finishes.

“I was pretty happy with my performance. Winning against some of the people I went against was nice, especially with how good swimmers they are.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I do some stretches before my races, and I usually have a Hershey bar before each race.”

FEMALE

Kayleigh Reed, Columbus Christian senior basketball player

Reed scored 10 points in the Crusaders’ 45-32 win over Horizon Christian in the ICST state semifinals. She added one point in Columbus Christian’s 53-29 title game win over Granger Christian.

Her performance last week:

“I felt the first game was pretty good. They were guarding Macy pretty tough, so we had to work the ball a lot more, and most of us had to pick up our game. For the second game, my shots weren’t falling that well, so I had to look for the openings and get it down low to the posts and I tried to work hard on defense to get some stops.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I like to listen to music and talk about the game with the girls before we go out on the floor.”
