Police: Man flees following robbery

Staff Reports

Police are looking for a lone suspect in the robbery of a Check ’N Go location on the city’s north side.

On Wednesday afternoon, Columbus police officers and Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies searched the area near the Check ’N Go, 2634 Eastbrook Plaza, at U.S. 31 and 25th Street, said Sgt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The suspect entered the Check ’N Go at 4 p.m. and displayed a handgun. A store employee was ordered to go to the back of the business, Harris said.

Check ’N Go offers a variety of financial services, including installment loans, payday loans and check cashing. The national firm has been in business since 1994, according to its website.

After the armed robber fled on foot, police used K-9 units to search neighborhoods near the shopping center. The search was suspended in late afternoon, but the investigation is continuing, Harris said.

The suspect was described as a black man, about 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, medium build, wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt and blue jeans, Harris said. Detectives obtained surveillance footage as part of the investigation.

People who may have information on the robbery or who recognize the suspect are urged to contact the Columbus Police Department at 812-376-2600.
