INDOT works to repair big pothole

NORTH VERNON — What appeared to be a pothole on U.S. 50 in downtown North Vernon was something more concerning.

Indiana Department of Transportation officials installed a 4- by 8-foot steel plate over an expanding hole in the eastbound lane of U.S. 50 at Madison Avenue — just west of the railroad tracks where the state highway curves to the east.

Officials said they believe a 3-foot storm drain pipe at the U.S. 50 and Madison Avenue intersection may have deteriorated, allowing the top to give way.

North Vernon utilities personnel said they will repair or replace the failed drainage pipe.
