New starting date for sheriff’s youth academy

The first Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department Summer Youth Academy, for children ages 7 to 15, has adjusted the opening date for this year’s program.

It will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 to 12 at Ceraland Park, 3989 South County Road 525E, Columbus.

The academy’s purpose is to educate tomorrow’s leaders by teaching citizenship, confidence, teamwork, integrity, perseverance, accountability and respect.

It will include activities that young people might experience in their future, such as scuba, water rescue, law enforcement academy drills and safety demonstrations.

Lunch will be provided at the day camp. Participants must have an appropriate swimsuit with them.

Applications are being accepted until May 11. Cost is $25 per child, but several scholarships are available for those who need assistance.
