Panthers take 3rd at invite

MADISON — Jennings County’s Jake Simmons shot a nine-hole 39 to place second and lead the Panthers to a third-place finish in a rain-shortened Madison Shawe Invitational on Saturday at Sunrise Golf Gourse.

The Panthers’ posted a 169 team score. Bailey Wilder shot 42 to tie for seventh place, and Ian Donnell added 43 to take 12th. Garrett Day (45) and Lane Sawyer (49) rounded out Jennings’ scores.

South Decatur finished sixth in the nine-team event with a 198. Brayden Helms and Jake Johnson each shot 48, while Seth Niese carded a 49, Kyle Carder added a 53 and Logan Owens had a 55.

The event was shortened to nine holes due to heavy rain and low temperatures.

Braves sweep Cougars

BROWNSTOWN — Brownstown Central pounded out 25 hits to defeat Trinity Lutheran 10-0 in five innings and then won 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Matt Fourman went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs in the second game for the Cougars (6-6). Jacob Moore, who threw a complete game, went 2 for 3.

Wildcats sweep Eagles

NASHVILLE — South Vermillion swept a doubleheader at Brown County on Friday, winning the Western Indiana Conference game 3-2 and the second game 15-1 in five innings.

The Eagles (2-4, 0-2) were victimized by 10 errors in the nightcap, when the Wildcats scored eight times in the first inning.
