Olympians win again on tennis courts

The Columbus East girls tennis team won its second match in as many days, tripling its win total for the season, with a 4-1 victory against East Central.

“I was pleased overall with how far we’ve come since the beginning of the season,” East coach Cheryl McGee said. “They’re proud of themselves, and they have no-quit attitudes.”

Megan Galle blanked Lindsay Bischoff 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Alaysha Pollert downed Lizzy Weigel 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Adycin Rager routed Ashli Horberger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (3-10).

“Singles I thought were outstanding,” McGee said. “We took a lead early, and we talked about that with the heat. All three of our singles were on it.”

East’s Carol Travis and Megan Newton beat Kelly Buescher and Shelby Lutz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Paige Webb and Nicole Knechtel fell to Gwen Kern and Morgan Weber 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Braves blank Jets

TRAFALGAR — Indian Creek won all five matches in straight sets to hand Hauser a 5-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss.

Claire Lutsch fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Danielle Giles lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Alaina Owen fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Jets (8-4). Erica Bostic and Annie Ashbrook lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Sarah Tedder and Madie Sherman fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

BOYS GOLF

North takes second

FRANKLIN — Sophomore Matt Vorndran shot the best round of his high school career, earning medalist honors with a 68, as Columbus North finished second in a three-way meet at Hillview Country Club.

North shot 302 as a team while top-ranked Center Grove placed first at 288. Franklin was third at 302, but lost on the fifth score tiebreaker to North.

Other scores for the Bull Dogs were Kyung Kim at 76, Jared Imlay and Connor Opalka at 79, Spencer Fairbanks at 81, Bryce Turner at 82, Conner Hayes at 84 and Zachary Schiavello at 86.

Eagles fall to Bluejackets

NASHVILLE — Brown County struggled in a 174-186 loss to Mitchell at Salt Creek.

Aubrey Seaman led the Eagles with a 41. Wes Weigel carded a 47; while Matt Wright, Gavin Brown and Jake Dixon all shot 49; Dawson Dunnuck added a 55; Ben Rygiel had a 70 and Tyler Kuzma finished with a 74.

BASEBALL

Crusaders fall to Traders Point

Traders Point Christian scored in six of the seven innings in handing Columbus Christian a 17-6 loss.

Logan Roth went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Crusaders (0-11). Levi Sallee went 2 for 4.

Red Devils run-rule Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jeffersonville broke open a close game with a six-run third and went on to hand Jennings County a 12-2, five-inning loss.

Caleb Eder went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Panthers (7-5). Justin Pettit went 2 for 3 with a double.

Panthers down Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur ran into one of the state’s top teams and suffered an 11-1 MHC loss to Knightstown, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A.

Baker Howard hit a second-inning homer for the lone run for the Cougars (3-8, 2-2).

SOFTBALL

Brown County cruises

GREENSBURG — Brown County scored 10 times after two were out in the first inning and went on to post a 19-8 win at South Decatur.

Bri Harper went 5 for 5 with four doubles and four runs scored to lead the Eagles (8-8). Caili Marcoux went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Kinsie Sandlin went 3 for 5, Azhia Morgan went 2 for 4, Dakota Anderson went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, Rachel Smith went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Maddy Edds had two RBIs.

Brittany Koors went 4 for 5 to lead the Cougars (3-10). Claire Wullenweber went 2 for 2, Kaitlin Owens went 2 for 4 and Mackenzie Kopplin went 2 for 5.

North falls to Cougars

Columbus North got goals from six players but fell to Bloomington North 9-6.

Caleb Spencer, Kaleb Steele, Tyler Wang, Dalton Carpenter, Sam Ellis and Wyatt Barkes scored the goals for the Bull Dogs (3-6). Steele, Lenny Cuzato, Jake Kelley and Ryan Wirth had assists, and Dawson Smith recorded seven saves.
