Police: Drunken driver rolls vehicle

A Columbus man was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated after his car overturned near a downtown intersection.

Joshua W. Robinson, 21, was examined at Columbus Regional Hospital after the 10:04 p.m. Friday accident near the intersection of 11th and Franklin streets, said Sgt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

After a blood test revealed a .28 blood-alcohol content, Robinson was arrested on the preliminary charge and taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, Harris said.

Police are continuing an investigation into the accident. Preliminary reports show Robinson was driving a 2000 Acura when he struck a parked vehicle and the car overturned, Harris said. Columbus Fire Department was called to remove Robinson from his vehicle, Harris said.

Garage fire destroys heirloom tools

A garage containing antique tools was destroyed in a fire in the 3000 block of 13th Street.

Columbus firefighters were called to the home at 3021 13th St. at 7:12 p.m. Friday after homeowner Krista Turner returned home and discovered flames coming from the garage, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, the flames were shooting out from the garage doors and eaves. The garage was about 20 feet from Turner’s home, but the fire was contained in the garage, Wilson said.

Firefighters did spray water on the home after the heat from the garage fire began melting vinyl siding, Wilson said. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes.

Dwight Turner, Krista Turner’s husband, told firefighters that he had been in the garage earlier in the evening and heard a “pop” sound after turning on a light switch inside the garage, Wilson said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Antique tools handed from family members were lost in the fire, Wilson said.

Columbus resident injured in auto crash

A Columbus man was transported by helicopter to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after an accident in the 7200 block of West State Road 46.

The accident happened about 6:25 p.m. Friday, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies Adam Warner and Dane Duke said in a report.

A vehicle, driven by Amanda Doles, age and address unavailable, was stopped in the eastbound lane of State Road 46 waiting to turn north into a driveway, the report said.

Another vehicle, driven by Kristina Smith, age and address unavailable, rear-ended Doles’ vehicle, according to the report.

Kristina Smith and her son, Kristopher Smith, 29, Columbus, were injured in the accident.

Kristopher Smith was taken by helicopter to Methodist, but hospital officials there did not return a telephone call Saturday about his condition. Kristina Smith was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Doles was checked and released by medical personnel at the scene, the deputies said.
