Solid waste district offers educational resources

The school year has just begun, and the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District wants to remind educators that we have many free resources available to assist classes and community groups. Those include field trips, presentations and classroom supplies/furniture.

Feel free to stop by the center and chat about potential ideas or interest. We are always looking to help and talk with Bartholomew County residents. These educational opportunities are available in a brochure form or by request.

Recycling Center field trip

Free educational tours of the Recycling Center are open to all ages and are offered year round. Tours are structured to grade levels or age. Attendees will see a variety of materials that are recycled and how they are handled.

The solid waste district partners with kidscommons for additional programming to include a tour of our bioswale and an educational recycling presentation.

Transportation costs are covered by the district when using buses from the Bartholomew Consolidated or Flat Rock-Hawcreek school corporations.

Landfill field trip

Free educational tours of the landfill are offered seasonally after spring break and until fall break in the school calendar and are offered for Grades 3 and up. Tours are structured to grade levels or age. Tours are also available to community groups in the summer.

The tour includes the wetlands, located at the facility. During the students’ visit to the landfill, they experience the trolley tour where they will learn about landfill construction, see an active landfill cell and learn how modern landfills are designed to protect the environment around them. Students also go through the wetlands and take part in educational programs with kidscommons.

Transportation costs are covered by the district when using buses from the Bartholomew Consolidated or Flat Rock-Hawcreek school corporations.

Presentations

Free classroom and community presentations are available year round for classes and community groups. Presentations are available on many topics, including recycling, reuse and landfills. Students can learn about our edible landfill program where they make their own landfill out of a variety of treats.

School houses

Little Red School House and Little Red School House Too are reuse facilities that have a wide variety of materials available at no cost, such as art/craft supplies, classroom supplies and furniture. Items are limited as availability depends on donations.

Little Red School House (at the Recycling Center) and Little Red School House Too (at the landfill) are open to all educators of Bartholomew County, including school teachers, Scout leaders, after-school teachers and community group leaders.

Little Red School House is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Little Red School House Too is open from 8 to 10 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month.
