Man hospitalized after 2-car crash

A local resident was transported by LifeLine helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital after a two-car accident on Marr Road on the north side of Columbus.

Samuel Whitehead, 57, of Columbus, was listed in stable condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital, hospital officials said.

Whitehead was alert at the accident scene but complained of pain, Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies said.

Whitehead was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo north on Marr Road about 7:46 a.m. Friday when he stopped to turn west onto Bridge Pointe Drive.

He was hit from behind by a 1995 Buick station wagon, deputies said.

The station wagon was driven by Boyce Stattenfield, 45, Columbus, who was not injured, deputies said.

Whitehead’s car traveled down an embankment into a ditch on the left side of Marr Road, deputies said.

A Columbus Township Fire Department crew used extrication equipment to remove a door and the top of the car to free Whitehead, fire department Capt. Dave Thompson said.
