Shirley Jean Akers, 91, of Chapa Drive, died at 1:43 p.m. Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Shirley was born May 5, 1924 in Osgood, the daughter of Harry and Marie Wagner Brown. She married Charles Dormand Akers, December 11, 1948. Charles preceded her in death August 4, 2006.

Shirley was formerly employed as Deputy Clerk of Ripley County for eight years and retired in 1985 from Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services after 17 years service as a secretary.

Since moving to Columbus in 1998, she attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the Hannah Missionary Circle. Shirley was also a member of Versailles Baptist Church, Versailles Order of Eastern Star #333 and a 67 year member of the Versailles American Legion Auxiliary.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Versailles Baptist Church, 228 South Washington Street, Versailles, Indiana with the Rev. Dan Cash officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th St., Columbus,and from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Cliff Hill Cemetery, Versailles.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles through the funeral home.

Survivors include her son, David (Karen) Akers of Columbus; daughter, Donna Sue (Ed) Schneider of Columbus; grandchildren, Matthew (Tasha) Akers, Rebecca (Daron) Brown, Mark Schneider and Julie (Brian) Doty; and great-grandchildren, Nicole Akers, Lindsay Akers, Sam Brown and Sydney Brown.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles.

Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
