Driver hits parked truck after reaching for device

Staff Reports

A semi driver who was reaching for his Bluetooth crashed into a pickup truck parked along Interstate 65 and then went over an embankment.

Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies said the semi, which didn’t have a trailer, went off the road at the 60.5 mile marker in the southbound lane about 11:56 a.m. Thursday.

The driver, Aaron Bowling, 33, of Palmyra, was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital, where he was treated for a cut to the head and released, sheriff’s deputies said.

Bowling told deputies that his vehicle struck a guardrail before going over the embankment.

The pickup that was hit was owned by Yardberry Landscaping and Excavating and being used by a crew working on a large culvert near the accident scene about 3 miles south of the Walesboro exit.

No one was in the pickup when it was hit, deputies said. A witness, who had stopped to assist Bowling, suffered minor injuries to his leg while running down the embankment. He was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
