Woman crashes into traffic sign, arrested for driving while intoxicated

Columbus police arrested a woman for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after she crashed into a traffic sign.

Columbus Police officer James Scott was sent to the crash at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday near 10th Street and Whitfield Drive, where he saw Lisa K. Welch, 59, 2101 10th St., stumbling in the roadway, said Sgt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Welch told Scott that she had been drinking at a nearby bar prior to the crash, Harris said.

After Welch failed field sobriety exercises she was taken to the police department, where she tested at .173 percent blood-alcohol content, more than twice Indiana’s legal limit for driving, Harris said.

Welch was released from the Bartholomew County Jail after paying a $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
