Melvin A. Behrman, 97, of Columbus died 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015, at Our Hospice of South Central Inpatient Facility.

Melvin was born October 5, 1917 in Bartholomew County the son of Franklin and Selma Langebrake Behrman. He married Elizabeth “Glee” Thayer January 1, 1941 in Columbus and she preceded him in death September 20, 2001. He then married Opal E. Bragg January 29, 2002 in Kissimmee, FL and she preceded him in death December 27, 2011.

He graduated from Columbus High School in 1936 and attended Madison College in Madison, TN. He worked 33 years for Cummins Engine Company retiring in 1973 as general foreman of inspection. He was also a farmer and farmed until he was 89 years old. He was a member of Browns Corner Chapel in Jennings County, loved Bible study, singing and his dog Dolly.

Melvin is survived by sons, Herbert (Bev) Behrman of Columbus and Ned (Brenda) Behrman of Columbus; daughter, Gail Carvin of Columbus; brothers, Harold Behrman of Columbus and Lester Behrman of Westport; sister, Margie (Kenneth) Vogt of Columbus; grandchildren, Annette (Michael Witschke) of San Diego, CA, Michael Behrman of San Francisco, CA, William (Jenna) Behrman of Columbus, Carrie (Wes) Mitchell of Franklin and Rebecca Carvin of Franklin; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; son, Julian Behrman; and brothers, Ralph and Victor Behrman.

Funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday by Hathaway~Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with Rev. Mark Hammel officiating. Family and friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery.
