Letter: Haw Creek remains disaster waiting to happen

From: John Boldt

Columbus

This letter may sound like sour grapes, but so be it. The fact remains that Haw Creek as it flows through the heart of Columbus is in horrible condition and is a disaster waiting to happen.

Based on some short-sighted legal advice, the Joint Drainage Board recently turned down the Citizens for Haw Creek’s petition to declare Haw Creek as a regulated drain. A vital opportunity was missed to initiate improvements to the creek that would have reduced the flooding potential.

It’s only a matter of time before the properties within the city’s Haw Creek floodplain will suffer substantial damages from a flood. Flooding is the new normal in the Midwest. I hope I never have to say, “I told you so.”
