When Helene Hanff needed to find obscure British literature titles she had been unable to find in New York City, she ended up contacting London’s Marks & Co. antiquarian booksellers. Her correspondence with the bookseller’s Frank Doel soon evolved into a 20-year correspondence — and a friendship between her and other shop members.
That’s the story of Hanff’s work, “84, Charing Cross Road,” part of a book discussion open to anyone interested at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St. in Columbus. The 1970 book later became a stage play, a television play and film.
The film version stars Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.
The library’s book discussion group, led by reference librarian Robert Mixner, meets every other month. Copies of “84, Charing Cross Road” are available at the library’s checkout desk.
