Blood donors sought for Liver Awareness Month

The American Red Cross is asking eligible donors to give blood and platelets during October as part of Liver Awareness Month.

Liver transplants are the second most common type of transplant with more than 6,000 performed in the United States each year. Liver transplant patients might require more than 30 pints of blood during surgery, American Red Cross officials said.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities include:

  • Today: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hauser High School, 9423 N. State Road 9
  • Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Columbus Blood donation Center, 931 Repp Drive
  • Oct. 9: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Columbus Blood donation Center, 931 Repp Drive
  • Oct. 10: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., First Lutheran Church, 3600 25th St.
