New film series to begin at library

A new, free film series, “Art House in the Red Room,” will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Bartholomew County Public Library’s Red Room, 536 Fifth St. in Columbus.

The series, hosted by Kyle Willey of Columbus, opens with “Onibaba,” a 1964 Japanese historical dramatic horror film set during a civil war in the 14th century.

A man forced to become a soldier in Japan leaves behind his wife and mother to live deep in the marshlands. The wife and mom begin to make a living by ambushing fatigued soldiers and then selling their belongings. The mother grows suspicious as an affair is sparked between the soldier’s wife and a neighboring deserter. Then, an ill-gotten demon mask seals the trio’s fate.

Movies will be shown at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.

“Onibaba” gained attention at the 1965 Blue Ribbon Awards for best cinematography and best supporting actress.
