Letter: President should address abortion issue

I am writing in regard to the article in The Republic titled “Too Routine,” published Oct. 2, concerning President Barack Obama’s frustration over the deadly school shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Regarding a change in gun control, he said, “I’d ask the American people to think about how they can get our government to change these laws and to save lives and to let young people grow up, and that will require a change of politics on this issue.”

I wish President Obama would express the same emotion over the abortion issue. Why is he not concerned about our federal tax money going to Planned Parenthood, where so many developing, defenseless children will never be allowed the chance to grow up?

In trying to save lives in a free society, rather than more gun control, wouldn’t it make more sense to stop funding Planned Parenthood and instead start appropriating that money to mental health resources in order to help and prevent deranged individuals from committing these senseless, horrific crimes? To do something about these issues, I believe, would also require a change in politics.
