Hauser rolls past 3 opponents for invitational title

EDINBURGH — The Hauser volleyball team swept three opponents in straight sets Saturday to claim Edinburgh’s Lancer Invitational championship.

The Class A No. 10 Jets (25-1) beat Trinity Lutheran 25-18, 27-25 and Monrovia 25-13, 25-13 in pool play, then downed Edinburgh 25-16, 25-12 in the title match.

Brea Metz pounded 25 kills, Alana Owen recorded 34 assists, Maranda Knight had eight blocks, Danielle Giles notched 31 digs and Sydney Schoen served eight aces to lead the Jets.

Schoen added 10 kills, 11 assists and 26 digs, while Knight contributed 10 kills and three aces and Giles had four assists and two aces. Metz recorded seven blocks, while Lucie Lortz added four blocks and Sarah Tedder had 20 digs.

The Lancers (21-9) beat Grenwood Christian Academy 25-19, 13-25, 25-17 and Liberty Christian 25-6, 25-17 in their pool to reach the final.

Trinity bounced back from its loss to Hauser by beating Monrovia 25-18, 25-14, then downing Greenwood Christian 25-9, 25-19 in the third-place match.

Haylee Barker earned 12 kills and Haylee Carter served four aces to lead the Cougars. Abby Hackman added 11 kills, and Anne Franke had three aces.

Olympians split 4 matches

Columbus East went 2-2 to finish fourth in its own invitational. The 4A No. 10 Olympians lost to Franklin 21-25, 25-21, 15-2; beat Lexington Tates Creek 20-25, 25-17, 16-14; beat 2A No. 6 Wapahini 18-25, 25-12, 15-13; and fell to 4A No. 6 Avon 25-22, 25-8.

Cortney VanLiew led East (22-6) with 40 kills, 44 digs and four aces. Kendal Williams recorded 78 assists, Kortney Thalls had 11 blocks and Brooke Banister served four aces.

Bailey Western added 26 kills and eight blocks. Katie Mack pounded 21 kills, Brooke Statler recorded seven blocks, AJ Pollert notched 39 digs and Banister had 26 digs.

North takes 7th in conference

TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North split a pair of matches to finish seventh in the Conference Indiana Tournament.

The Bull Dogs (9-21) opened the day with a 25-15, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19 loss to Terre Haute North. Columbus North bounced back with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 win against Southport in the seventh-place match.

Columbus Christian falls

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus Christian saw its season come to an end with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-11 loss at Bloomington Lighthouse in the Indiana Christian School Tournament Regional final.

Hannah Lorimor led the Crusaders (6-7) with four kills, one block and four digs. Madison Henderson recorded nine assists, and Lauren Hunnicutt served three aces.

Savannah Spurgeon pounded three kills, while Hunnicutt added two kills. Mayah Schundelmier had two aces.

CROSS-country

Panther girls win sectional

HANOVER — Jennings County placed five runners in the top 20 to capture the Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional. The Panthers finished with 50 points to 70 for Southwestern and Switzerland County.

Ashley Heindel led Jennings with an eighth-place finish in 22 minutes, 7 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Olivia Heaton took ninth in 22:11, while Nicole Richardson was 12th (22:26), Emilee Greathouse 13th (22:27) and Sydney Taylor 18th (22:55).

Austin slipped past the Panthers 46-52 in the boys meet. Ricky Hendrix finished second in 16:43, while Alex Hendrix was fourth (16:54), Franklin Sanders fifth (16:55), Wayne Komsi 12th (17:35) and Ryan Gasper 30th (18:50).

Hauser falls in final

OSGOOD — Jac-Cen-Del captured its own sectional title with a 6-1 win against Hauser.

Justin Stafford scored the goal for the Jets (6-6-3) off an assist from Kyler Davis. Pete Trotter recorded five saves.

Trojans top Panthers

BATESVILLE — Jennings County’s season came to an end with a 5-0 loss to East Central in the Batesville Sectional final.

The Panthers (10-7-2) trailed 3-0 at halftime, were outshot 11-6 by the Trojans. Jackson Shepherd recorded nine saves.
