Sheriff’s department receives scam reports

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department has received two reports of individuals being called by someone impersonating a sheriff’s deputy.

In the scam calls, both victims were advised that they had missed jury duty, and unless they transferred money via a prepaid Visa card, PayPal or some other payment method, a warrant for their arrest would be issued.

Anyone who receives this type of call should hang up immediately and contact the Emergency Operations Center at 812-379-1689 or the sheriff’s department at 812-376-1650, deputies said. Do not provide information or payment over the telephone, deputies said.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers is asking residents to share this information particularly with older relatives and friends who are most often the target of a telephone scam.
