Recycling events abound this month

Fall is here and the good ol’ Indiana weather is still unpredictable as ever. Today you are in long sleeves and pants, but tomorrow you might want to get out your rain boots or tank tops.

The crazy weather can have you underprepared for the first step outside in the morning, but there are a few things you can be certain about this month of November. There will be a number of events, some that will save you money and some that will decorate your lives.

America Recycles Day is Nov. 14, and to celebrate we want you to “Get Caught Recycling!” on Friday, we will be at our various recycling locations in hopes of rewarding recyclers with prizes for doing their part to help the environment. You can also check out our Facebook page for more details.

On Nov. 14, the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District will also be hosting its semi-annual Amnesty Day at the Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bartholomew County residents are welcome to bring the following hard-to-dispose of items at no charge for recycling:

Four passenger tires with the rims removed

Up to two CFC appliances (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, etc.)

Up to two propane gas tanks

This is a great way to help the environment and also help your pocketbook, since you can save up to $50 in disposal fees.

Is this all sounding familiar to you? Maybe you are having a little bit of déjà vu? The solid waste district will have a booth at the Déjà Vu Fine Art and Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at The Commons. There will be different artist displaying beautiful pieces of fine art for sale, all made from reused or recycled materials. These items would make great Christmas gifts.

There also will be a showing of the docu-comedy film “YERT,” 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at The Commons. It is an environmental road-trip story looking at the challenges of pollution. Be sure to check it out.

The staff at the solid waste district would like to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving. We hope to see you at one of our events for America Recycles Day.
