Carl Alan “Al” Bierlein, 80, of Columbus, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mr. Bierlein was born July 7, 1935, in Brownstown, Indiana. He married Mary Jane Harrell February 9, 1963, in Columbus. She preceded him in death March 20, 2014.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mr. Bierlein was a mechanical engineer and retired from American Electric Power.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbus and Shelburn Masonic Lodge in Shelburn, Indiana.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Bierlein’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Myers-Reed Chapel, 3729 25th St., Columbus, with Pastor Mark R. Teike officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday.

Inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military rites presented by members of Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bartholomew County Humane Society or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Mr. Bierlein is survived by a daughter, Elisabeth (John) Leonard of Augusta, Georgia; a son, Ben (fiancé Nadra Maxwell) Bierlein of Indianapolis; and three grandsons, Johnny, Nick and Michael Leonard, all of Augusta, Georgia.

Along with his wife of 51 years, Mr. Bierlein was also preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Bierlein.
