Norma Marie Anness

Metamora

Marie was born in Martinsville, IN, on April 8, 1920, to Lucius and Susan Cramer. She was married to the love of her life, Milford E. Anness on July 8, 1939.

Marie is survived by her sister, Marjorie Cramer Faught of Connersville, IN; her children, Suzanne (Jim) Gillum of Avon, IN, Ronald (Molly) Anness of Greenfield, IN, Dennis (JoAnne) Anness of Columbus, IN, Ed (Becky Mattingly) Anness of Indianapolis, IN,and Mark (Robin) Anness of New Palestine, IN; and seven cousins, Donald (Sally) Messmer and Frances Evelyn McCombs, both of Connersville, IN, Pat (John) Priest, Fred Schoolcraft, Larry Schoolcraft, Duane Messmer and Gladys Jones, all of Martinsville, IN. She was grandmother to 12 wonderful grandchildren and 13 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Milford; a son, John; and brother, Charles Cramer.

Marie and Milford lived in Metamora, Liberty, Connersville and Columbus, Indiana, during their lifetimes and were members of the Churches of Christ in all those towns. They worked tirelessly for their church and traveled extensively consulting on the legal aspects of several Christian missions in India, Russia and Africa. Milford and Marie were noted for their singing and were called on many times to sing at services and weddings.

Marie worked as a secretary in Milford’s legal practice in Columbus for many years while juggling a household, church work and many other community activities. He often said she was an indispensable part of the practice. Her church activities included working with FAME, a group of medical evangelists, as well as TCM (Toronto Christian Mission). Activities in Columbus included working with the Retarded Children Foundation and Legal Secretaries of Bartholomew County.

Marie was especially proud of her Root Beer Cellar located in the Canal House of Metamora, IN. Other Metamora activities included being Mrs. Claus for the children at Christmas time and working with the women’s auxiliary of the Metamora Fire Department, known as the Hot Flashes. Marie can be credited with keeping the Memorial Day on the bridge in Metamora functioning after the death of her husband until the Masonic Lodge took over that tradition. She ordered the fireworks for the Metamora 4th of July celebration and always worked as a clerk on election day. She was one of those persons who enhanced a community and will surely be missed.
