John R. Taylor, 84, of Westport, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at Keepsake Village in Columbus.

He was born on April 12, 1931, in Greenwood, the son of Marshall I. and Edna (Eurton) Taylor. He was raised in Decatur County and lived in Bartholomew County from 1958 to 1965. He has been a Decatur County resident since 1965 and Westport resident since 1985. He graduated from Sandcreek High School in 1949 and was a self-employed farmer and truck driver. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Mt. Aerie Baptist Church, the Million Mile Safe Driving Club and received the driver of the month award in August of 1977 from the Indiana Motor Truck Association. He also enjoyed golfing.

He married Doris M. Stuart in Rodney on August 19, 1950, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Darla May (Rev. Barry) Goodman of Hope; his sons, Rick D. (Melissa) Taylor of Denver, North Carolina and Randy D. (Janet) Taylor of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Richard Lee Taylor; his sisters, Mary Lou Bueche’ and Susan P. Owens; and his brother, Marshall Leroy Taylor.

The funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with the Rev. Barry Goodman officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Aerie Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
