Applications to replace superintendent start flowing in

The first applications have come in from candidates interested in becoming the next Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. superintendent.

Superintendent John Quick announced in September he would retire July 1 after 13 years as the district’s superintendent.

Quick came to BCSC in 1991 as principal of Taylorsville Elementary School and stepped into his current role as superintendent in 2003.

He will retire after 25 years in the BCSC district and 40 years in education overall.

As of last week, the superintendent search committee — composed of education professors from Ball State, Indiana, Indiana State and Purdue universities — had received two applications for the position, BCSC school board president Bob Abrams said.

However, Ball State professor Lynn Lehman, who heads the committee, has spoken with other interested educators who say they intend to apply before the Jan. 8 deadline, Abrams said.

“Part of our planning schedule was to give people Christmas break to prepare,” Abrams said.

Applications, which are available on the district’s website, initially are submitted to the search committee, but the seven-member school board will receive and begin reviewing the submissions with the committee on Jan. 19.

Additionally, school board members will soon begin reviewing responses to the community survey it created to allow local residents to give their input on the qualities they would like to see in the district’s next leader.

The board received about 500 responses to the survey, Abrams said. Although he has not perused them yet, Abrams said he noticed a wide variety of opinions in his initial review of the responses.

He said the board will consider the community’s feedback as it reviews applications next month.

The school board president said he hopes to have a candidate selected by early spring.
