Rivers expected to crest today

Flood warnings remain in effect today as area rivers are expected to crest slightly above flood stage.

The East Fork White River was at roughly 8½ feet Monday afternoon, just under the 9-foot flood stage. The river was expected to crest at 11.3 feet at about midday today.

The Driftwood River at Edinburgh was over flood stage at at 12.65 feet at midday Monday. Flood stage is 11 feet. The river is expected to crest at 14.6 feet by midday today.

City and county officials closed several roads and sections of the People Trails in Columbus on Monday after heavy rainfall Sunday night into Monday.

Among the closings:

  • The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department closed portions of the People Trails in Mill Race Park and Noblitt Park. The trails will reopen after the water drains and crews clean any mud and debris left behind. For more information: 812-376-2599.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management officials have announced road closings and areas where high water is making driving difficult:

  • All Mill Race Park entrances are closed.
  • County Road 400N and the Tinkey Bridge, closed between U.S. 31 and River Road.
  • County Road 800S, closed between Jonesville Road and U.S. 31.

The National Weather Service reported from 2 to 5 inches of rain fell throughout much of the state from late Saturday morning through Monday. The heaviest rainfall was in west central Indiana and east central Illinois. An additional inch or more of rain is expected by this morning.
