Richard Wayne “Unkie” Wertz, 80, of Edinburgh, Indiana, passed away on Jan. 8, 2016, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Greenwood, Indiana.

He was born Dec. 16, 1935, in Shelbyville. He was the son of Paul A. “Curly” and Madge E. (Robertson) Wertz. He married Rita (VanGorden) Wertz on June 16, 1963.

He is survived by his wife and a nephew, David Gene (Julie) Wertz of Bloomington, Indiana.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Robert G. Wertz.

Richard was a1953 graduate of Flat Rock High School. He was a member of the Flat Rock team that won the Shelby County Tourney in 1953. He worked at Amos-Thompson Corporation, in the Amos Plastics Division where he served as a foreman, supervisor and process technician. He retired in 1998 after 43 years.

He was a member of the Flat Rock United Methodist Church and attended Edinburgh United Methodist Church. He attended Purdue’s Supervisory Development Program and Commercial Trades Institute. He was in the Indiana National Guard from 1958 until 1964, in the Cyclone Division and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was an assistant Scout Master for a boy scout troop. He was on the Amos Plastic Bowling League and once bowled a 300 game. He was also a Civil War buff, a Johnny Cash fan, an Indy Car fan and enjoyed taking pictures.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at Edinburgh United Methodist Church in Edinburgh by the Rev. Sean Johnson. Calling will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edinburgh Cheer Fund and the Edinburgh Food Pantry.
