Kiel rejoins Cincinnati football team

Former Columbus East star Gunner Kiel, who started at quarterback for the University of Cincinnati football team this past season but missed the Bearcats’ bowl game due to personal reasons, is back at school and has rejoined the program, head coach Tommy Tuberville announced.

Tuberville made the announcement while introducing three new assistant coaches at a news conference Sunday.

Kiel, who already has earned his undergraduate degree, will be taking graduate courses as he prepares for his final season of eligibility in 2016.

In 10 games last fall, Kiel threw for 2,777 yards and 19 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. Tuberville said that the fifth-year senior will have to work to regain his starting job.

“As I told him, he’ll start from the bottom and work back up,” the coach said.
