I like a good New Year’s celebration, and the Chinese New Year Gala promises to be just that. Set for 3 to 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at Columbus North High School, the evening will feature performances and a silent auction as well as a dinner. Tickets: $10 for gala performance and silent auction. Dinner tickets: $10. Children younger than 5: $5 for a combo ticket covering both performance and dinner. Information: Jinchao Lu, 352-226-2259 or [email protected].

A new discovery about myself: I cry at weddings. I think my tears are based on the sheer magic of coordination: the clothes, the cake, the venue — everything works in tandem for a beautiful day. So I’m planning on strolling around the annual Bridal Show, noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 31, Clarion Hotel & Convention Center, 2480 Jonathan Moore Pike. More than 60 booths showcasing reception locations, photographers, caterers, dresses, cakes and other wedding necessities. Admission is free. Presented by The Republic.
