Give blood

If you are looking for an opportunity to donate, consider something other than a monetary gift. Consider giving blood.

A blood supply shortage exists locally and nationwide. The Indiana Blood Center and American Red Cross are asking for donations of blood that are needed for medical procedures, especially at a time of year when blood supplies run low.

This is a great way to help others and make a difference. For more information, go online at redcross.org or donorpoint.org/donor/auth/signin.

Hip hip hooray!

Three cheers to all of the elementary basketball players, cheerleaders, coaches and other volunteers associated with the BCSC Elementary Basketball League and its season-ending Super Saturday.

While the competitive aspect of the event is apparent, more important is the dedication each athlete shows throughout the season, and the character-building and other life skills that occur. For example, students learned about accepting others as shown by some special needs students participating with their school’s cheerleading squad.

These extracurricular activities are important teaching and learning opportunities, and Super Saturday provided many examples why it is called just that.

Beneficial campaign

Kudos to the individuals and businesses that made the holiday giving program Grant A Wish a record-breaker this year. The total of $60,241 was about $2,000 more than the previous highest total.

A lot of good was accomplished with that amount, as the program benefited 45 local nonprofit agencies with 126 total wishes. In the program’s six years, more than $260,000 has been raised for nonprofits.

That giving starts with you, and your generosity and desire to help nonprofits that make a difference in the lives of local residents.
