Edgar Ray Jordan, of Columbus, passed from this life on the night of Jan. 29, 2016. He was 83 years old.

Born Sept. 11, 1932, in Grammer, Indiana, Ed was the son of Harold and Thelma Jordan. He lived his early life in Bartholomew County and later moved to Frankton, Indiana.

Ed joined the Columbus Police Department on Sept. 15, 1956, and retired in 1976. Afterward he worked as a security guard for Cummins Engine Co.

He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean conflict. There, on his birthday, he met his wife of 60 years, Hedwig (Hedda). She survives.

Also surviving are their sons, Harold R. and Robert L. (Mechthild) Jordan, both of Columbus; and granddaughters, Alina (Mark) and Annika; as well as his sister, Darla (Gene) Brown, also of Columbus.

Ed enjoyed fishing, IU basketball and baseball (spending many an afternoon with family and friends at ballparks). As a younger man, he attended the Indy 500 race, most often with his father. In his last years Ed would spend his mornings at Fire Station 3 during shift change, arguing and teaching the guys how to make coffee.

Visitation hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2 at Jewell –Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Columbus Police Department Honor Guard presiding.
