BCSC hires new early education director

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. has hired a new prekindergarten programming director.

Shane Yates already works with the district as a teacher at Clifty Creek Elementary School. Starting next school year, he will take over the district’s early childhood programming, working with 4-year old students preparing to enter kindergarten. Yates will replace current director Cathne Holliday, who recently accepted an assistant principal position at Clifty Creek.

“I know young kids are very creative,” Yates said. “I took a tour of the (Busy Bee Academy) building. There was a magical feel.”

Yates said he already has started meeting with kindergarten teachers at his current school for advice on working with the young students.

“There are a lot of skills they don’t come to school with,” Yates said. “They don’t know how to stand in line, interact well with each other. I really want to spend as much time as possible in the classroom, so that I can learn how to teach these skills.”

This is Yates’ first venture into administration, he said. He is completing coursework related to obtaining his administrative license, which he plans to finish in about two months.

While Yates will be working out of the Busy Bees Academy, 1209 Sycamore St., he will also oversee operations of preschool programs at the district’s elementary schools where they are offered.
