Windcrest Place

Florine Barbara Dilts, 84, of Windcrest Place, died at 9:05 p.m. March 10, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility from congestive heart failure.

Florine was born June 21, 1931, in Decatur County, the daughter of Curtis Dalton and Ida Mae Mankin Guinn. She married John A. Dilts June 1, 1949, at First Christian Church of Columbus.

Many people in Columbus know Flo as “the glasses lady” at Columbus Optical where she was excellent at helping customers choose frames and adjusting glasses to fit correctly. Her favorite task was putting glasses on young children and watching their delight in seeing for the first time.

Flo was a member of Wertz United Methodist Church before joining Sandy Hook United Methodist Church where she was a 1955 founding member of the Wedding Ring Class and member of the Chigger Diggers church camping group. She was also active with the youth group when her children were younger and served on many committees including Pastor Parish and United Methodist Women. She was a current member of the J.O.Y. class.

Flo was also a member of the Bartholomew County Home Economics club, “Our Night Out”, better known as O.N.O. by the girls, since the 1950s.

Flo and John, her husband of 66 years, enjoyed going to Panama City Beach, Florida, every winter of their retirement. Each day they would walk the beach together.

She enjoyed sewing, making most of her children’s clothes, curtains and reupholstering furniture, crafting and cooking. She always made Christmas candy and cookies to give away to many organizations, family and friends.

Flo also enjoyed her many volunteer trips to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky with her United Methodist Church family.

The funeral will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2106, at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Russell officiating. Calling will be from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery, next to her husband and two infant children, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility or Red Bird Mission, 70 Queendale Center, Beverly, KY 40913-9607.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda (Larry) Grimsley of Columbus and Julie (Dale) Stelting of Nashville; son, Brian (Lynette) Dilts of Columbus; grandchildren, Lindsey Jones, Loren French, Zachariah Stelting, Samantha Stelting McNamara, Brandon Dilts and Michael Dilts; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two children, Susan Jo Dilts and Steven Michael Dilts; a brother, Ray Guinn; and three sisters, Faye Evans, Ruth Wolfe and Reba Murphy.
