Dr. Robert Gayle

Columbus

Dr. Robert “Bob” L. Gayle died March 17, 2016, in Columbus, Indiana, with his loving wife of 33 years, Judy Gayle, by his side.

The essence of this man many called Bobby, was the love of family, history, golf and classical music. He was our kind, gentle and caring husband, father, brother and friend.

Bob was born March 23, 1933, in Stamping Ground, Kentucky. He was the third of four children born to Iva and Lance Gayle. They moved the family to Anderson, Indiana, in 1936.

At Anderson High, Bob was a competitive wrestler and track star. During high school, Bob joined the Navy Reserves, setting the stage for his 1954 enlistment in the Navy as a Radio Operator on the USS Thomaston. Bob studied science as an undergraduate at Ball State University and, following his tour in the Navy, enrolled in Indiana University School of Dentistry. He graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1960.

Following his graduation, Bob started his dental practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he built lasting friendships with his patients and colleagues alike through his retirement in 1998. During his career, Bob served as President of the Indiana Dental Association and acted as a guest lecturer and instructor for the dental community.

While in Fort Wayne, Bob was an active member in both Pine Valley and Sycamore Hills Country clubs where he met and married the love of his life, Judy Griffin Gayle. Their 33 year journey included more rounds of golf than a lifetime could offer, including six hole-in‐ones and a group of wonderful friends from their time in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Estero, Forida; and Columbus, Indiana.

Bob is survived by his wife, Judy Gayle; his three children, Laurie Garrison, Karen Mays and Lance Gayle; step‐daughters, Jane Bowers and Julie Shumaker; eight grandchildren; and five great-grand‐children.

The family will be hosting “A Celebration of Life” on Saturday April 2, 2016, with details to follow.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be made to the education fund for Bob’s great‐grandson, Samuel Maxx Barton, for special needs education. Please make checks payable to Fit Learning, 9408 Double R Suite B, Reno, Nevada 89521, Attn: Donna, with memo referencing Sam Barton.
