Herschel N. Thorpe, 84, of Columbus, passed from this life at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Mr. Thorpe retired from Cummins Engine Company and East Columbus Christian Church.
He was a member of East Columbus Christian Church and Stoney Lonesome in Brown County.
He enjoyed gardening, riding motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at East Columbus Christian Church with Ron Bridgewater officiating.
Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Wednesday at the church.
In keeping with Mr. Thorpe’s wishes, cremation is planned and private inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery Bell Tower.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to East Columbus Christian Church.

Born December 13, 1931, in Greensburg, Mr. Thorpe was the son of Herschel and Bessie Mae Sylvia Thorpe.
Survivors include his children, Wayne (Marlena) Thorpe, Teresa (Don) Brown, Waynetta Olmstead and Evelyn Thorpe, all of Columbus; sisters, Christine (Sam) Ogilvie of Columbus and Willa Mae Norris of Florida; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
