Leona Marie Tichenor AmRhein Buirley, 98, of Westport, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg.

She was born July 18, 1917, in Greensburg, the daughter of Alfonso and Cleona (Gardner) Tichenor. She was raised in the Letts community and had been a Westport resident since 1970.

Leona was a seamstress, farmer and a farmer’s wife. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg, Decatur County Home Extension Club, active member of the (WOW) Westports of the World Organization and was a room mother at Sandcreek School. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Her first marriage was to George Richard AmRhein, in Millhousen, on July 20, 1938. He preceded her in death June 3, 1990. Her second marriage was to Herold Buirley and he preceded her in death February 13, 2009.

Survivors include her sons, Wayne Fred (Donna) AmRhein of Westport, Richard E. (Patti) AmRhein of Homestead, Florida, and Kenneth H. (Kathy) AmRhein of Elizabethtown; her sisters, Zelma Barnes, Mary Barnes and Bonnie Evans, all of Greensburg, Charlotte Huffmeyer of Morris and Sally Weber of London; her brother, John Arthur Tichenor of Tucson, Arizona; her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Diane (Matthew) Shuter of Columbus, Brian (Natalie) AmRhein of Bloomington, Wayne (Lynne) AmRhein Jr. of Greensburg, Gretchen Marie (Brad) Armand of North Vernon, Michael Todd (Jackie) AmRhein, Aimee Marie (Brian) Cunningham and Gregory Scott (Brandi) AmRhein ,all of Westport, and a stepgranddaughter, Amy (Andrew) Bailey of Charleston, South Carolina; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her sisters, Margaret Miller and Georgetta Swagman; and her brother, Lowell Tichenor.

Family and friends will gather for a Rosary Service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016, followed by visitation from 4 until 8 p.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. The funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Millhousen with Father Bill Turner officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greensburg.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
