Joan Lillian Elkins, 85, of Taylor Road, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation of Columbus after an extended illness.

She was born April 26, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio, to Russell and Ruth Moore Crowe. She met her future husband, E. Robert Elkins, while he was in the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base. They were married June 19, 1955, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton by the Rev. Westhaver.

After graduating from the University of Dayton, Mrs. Elkins taught several years in the Dayton School System before moving to Columbus after her marriage. In Columbus, she taught fourth and fifth grades at McKinley School for five years.

Other interests included being a Girl Scout leader, home economics and 4-H club activities.

She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she taught 3- and 4-year-old Sunday school classes for many years, chaired the Tape Ministry to shut-ins and sang in the choir.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years; son, Ronald (Charlotte) Elkins, and their daughters, Leah and Morgan; and daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Imel and their sons, William (Megan) and Thomas “T.J.”, all of Columbus.

Mrs. Elkins was preceded in death by her father, Russell Crowe, and her mother, Ruth Ann Rensch.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor John W. Armstrong officiating.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
