39 IU students arrested on charges of illegal consumption

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 39 Indiana University students on charges of illegal consumption after being called to a home in the Grandview Lake area.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Kris Weisner was sent to a home on West Glen Lane at about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, deputies said.

Weisner spoke with three 20-year-old females who admitted they had been drinking alcohol at the residence, deputies said. This led to a number of other people at the home who were underage admitting that they too had been drinking, deputies said.

Deputies Sgt. John Martoccia and Andrew Whipker assisted in taking all 39 students to the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of illegal consumption.

In Indiana, illegal consumption is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
