Lawrence E. Thomas, 74, of Columbus, passed from this life at 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Thomas known as “Wally” by his work family, retired from Cummins Engine Company in 2000 where he had worked for 31 years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was an usher for several years and Diesel Workers Union. He was a former member of Jonesville Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Brigade at Cummins Engine Company and was a 1961 graduate of Lanesville High School in Lanesville, Indiana. He was an Army veteran, and served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968 and was the recipient of The Army Commendation Medal. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, gardening, hunting, being outdoors and bluegrass music.

Mr. Thomas was born in Harrison County, Indiana on April 20, 1941. He was the son of Leo Thomas, Sr. and Myrtle Louise Satterfield Thomas. He married Patricia Ann Stiles on July 25, 1969.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Adam Carrigan officiating. Family and friends may call from 1 p.m. to time of service at the funeral home. Additional calling will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon, Indiana.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon. Military Honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Ceremonial Unit.

The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Jonesville-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department or Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years; his daughter, Michele Lea Thomas (Robert III) Dole of Fishers; six nieces; and several great-nieces; great-nephews; and many dear friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leo Thomas, Jr.; and a sister, Barbara Gessler.
