Letter: Forward-thinking Pitman right choice for representative

From: Beverly McDermott

Columbus

Though I have lived in Columbus all my life, this is my first letter to the editor. And since I have been around nearly three-fourths of a century (unbelievable), the reason I am writing must be pretty important, and it is. I am writing to ask for your support of Bob Pitman as our next district representative in the Indiana General Assembly.

I first met Bob in 1983 when I was chairman of the Bartholomew County United Way campaign. He headed the campaign at Ivy Tech. A couple of years later he moved to the senior center, and I continued to work with him as he headed a United Way agency and I served on the United Way board of directors. Over the years of staying in touch with Bob, I came to know, like and respect him very much.

Several times I asked him why someone so talented was still in Columbus when he could have easily gone on to bigger and better opportunities in other cities. His response was always, “Because I love Columbus and all the people here.” We are so fortunate that this attitude has prevailed over the years.

As all of our senior residents know, Bob led the development, growth and expansion of the senior center into what has now become Mill Race Center. He was always at the forefront of new ideas, not only for senior citizens but also for the community. He is personable, very approachable and always has a smile on his face. But most of all he is a forward thinker and a strong advocate of cooperative efforts. He always has the best interest of his constituents at heart.

Bob’s talents and compassion were recognized when he was given the Laws Human Rights Award in 2012. And when he retired from Mill Race Center in 2014 after 30 years, he was honored for his leadership in meeting the needs of older adults with the creation of the Pitman Institute for Aging Well.

In addition to his local achievements, he has been involved with several state and national retirement organizations. If you would like to know more about his background, accomplishments and position on issues, please visit this Facebook page: Bob Pitman for State Representative.

Again, I strongly encourage your vote on May 3 for Democrat Bob Pitman as our District 59 state representative.
