Bernice D. Herring Barkes, 86, of Columbus, died at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Mrs. Barkes was born April 17, 1930, in Petersville, to Jesse and Iva Cordry Butler. She married J. Stanley Herring March 12, 1948. He preceded her in death in April 1986. She later married Richard D. Barkes Oct. 24, 1998. He preceded her in death March 22, 2009.
A homemaker, Mrs. Barkes’ true passion in life was her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Terri Johnson of Columbus; a granddaughter, Amanda Kendrick of North Vernon; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Nathaniel and Draven; a sister, Mae Jenkins of Columbus; a brother, Paul (Janet) Butler of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sisters, Irene Lykins and Nora Jean Taylor; and brothers, James D. and Charles Butler.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Stan Thomas officiating. Calling will be from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday. Burial will be at Bear Creek Baptist Cemetery.
