Tax-assistance program saves money for residents

More than 1,000 Bartholomew County residents filed their income taxes this year through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and AARP tax-preparation programs, saving an estimated $96,570 in taxpayer fees for eligible residents.

People using the program collected $743,964 in refunds, according to the United Way of Bartholomew County. Taxpayers also claimed $182,697 in earned income tax credits through using the free tax-assistance program.

That resulted in more than $850,000 being returned to county residents by using the program, the United Way said.
