Car flips over ditch in U.S. 31 wreck

A local man was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital after a two-vehicle accident at U.S. 31 and County Road 500N.

When Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Whipker arrived at about 3:50 p.m. Thursday, he found Richard Erdmann, 58, of Columbus, out of his vehicle, which had overturned over a water-filled ditch.

Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that Michael Schubel, 66, Columbus, was driving east on County Road 500N when he attempted to cross U.S. 31 but collided with Erdmann’s vehicle, which was northbound on U.S. 31, Whipker said.

Erdmann was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released, hospital officials said. Schubel was evaluated at the scene and released, deputies said.
