Services and studies

Fairlawn Presbyterian — The Rev. Dr. Lee Dorsey will lead the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at the church, 2611 Fairlawn Drive in Columbus. The sacrament of communion will also be held and fellowship time and Christian education will immediately follow. The Christian education outline for May is LEGO curriculum for elementary-aged children and adult group study or continuation of the study of John in the Fellowship Hall.

Women’s Bible study will meet at 2:30 p.m. May 9 in the library.

Fairlawn Preschool Bible Adventures will be at 9:15 a.m. May 10 and 11.

First Baptist — The Rev. Dan Cash will deliver the message, “Don’t Close the Door on God’s Vision,” with Scripture from Acts 16:6-15 at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at the church, 3300 Fairlawn Drive in Columbus. Child care will be available for infants. Older children will leave for children’s church during the service.

Classes for all ages will begin at 10:45 a.m.

The Hannah Circle will meet at 2 p.m. Monday.

Zumba classes will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Wednesday: 4TWELVE will meet at 6 p.m. The Spring Cross Connections Bible study will meet at 6 p.m. in the chapel for an in-depth look at I Thessalonians. Participants should being their study Bible.

The Men of Faith will meet at 6:15 a.m. Friday in the private dining room at Four Seasons Retirement Center for breakfast and study. A video and discussion time, “When Helping Hurts,” presented by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, will be facilitated by Pastor Cash.

First Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 512 Seventh St. in Columbus. This communion service will follow the theme “Weaving Together” and will feature special music by the Adult Choir. The Rev. Felipe Martinez will deliver the sermon, “Woven Together By Spirit,” based on John 14:23-29.

Infant and toddler care is available from 9:15 a.m. to noon. Christian education opportunities for children preschool through elementary begin at 10 a.m. The Adult Fellowship and education hour at 11 a.m. Sunday is offering an inductive Bible study on the book of Colossians. Youth have Sunday school at 10:45 a.m. and Youth Group is from 5:45 to 8 p.m. The Men’s and Women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Friday.

Those in need of a meal are invited to the church’s hot meal at 5 p.m. Friday. Enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.

First United Methodist — The Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message,“When Faith Disturbs Us,” at both the 9 and 11 a.m. services at the church, 618 Eighth St. in Columbus. Scripture will be Acts 16:16-34. Coffee Connections will take place in the library between services.

Boles is teaching a short-term Sunday school class, which ends May 8, in the fellowship hall between services. The class focuses on the upcoming United Methodist gathering called the General Conference which takes place every four years. All are welcome. The Travelers Class is part of this group.

There will be an informational meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday for the scheduled Guatemala Mission trip planned for next March during spring break. If you would like to participate in the trip or would like further information, plan to attend this meeting.

Boles has selected “Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout for the May Book Club. This group will meet at 6 p.m. May 15. All are welcome.

Vacation Bible school will be June 26 to 29 for ages 3 to those entering sixth grade in August. Volunteers are needed. Contact the church office to sign up or for additional information.

Julianna Jerome-Drerup will be the featured guest for Fridays at First at 7 p.m. Friday in the sanctuary. She will be performing a selection of songs about motherhood. This performance is free and open to the public.

Flintwood Wesleyan — Sunday services begin with Sunday school for all ages starting at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 10:30 a.m. worship service, led by the Rev. Wes Jones, at the church, 5300 E. 25th St. in Columbus. Prayer Ministry team meets at 10:15 a.m. in the Prayer Room downstairs. Choir practice is at 5 p.m. followed by the 6 p.m. service.

Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Jesus And Me program at 6:15, Youth at 6:30 p.m. and Adult Bible study at 7 p.m. Prayer Ministry Team meets at 6:15 p.m. in the Prayer Room.

Cub Scout Pack No. 588 meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Boy Scout Troop No. 588 meets at 7 p.m.

All small groups meet in the Friendship Center.

North Christian — The Rev. Cheryl Cloar and director of music Elizabeth Clark will lead the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service in the church sanctuary, 850 Tipton Lane in Columbus. A nursery for preschool-age children staffed by a professional caregiver is available.

The Adult Class, led by Sheryl Elston, will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday in the Blue Room to continue a four-week study on end-of-life challenges.

Centering Prayer will be at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Prayer Chapel.

The Disciples Women’s Ministries meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Anna Jacobson’s home, 2666 Pearl St.

Handbell Choir rehearsal will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room LL12 and Chancel Choir rehearsal will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Room LL8.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Pastor Kirby Rupp will deliver the message, “Getting Directions,” during the 10 a.m. Sunday service at the church, 12703 N. County Road 50W, Edinburgh. Scripture will include Acts 16:9-15, Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5 and John 14:23-29. Sunday school begins at 9 a.m. and fellowship is at 9:40 a.m. The Evening Prayer and Eucharist service will be at 6 p.m.

Wednesday Bible study meets at 6:30 p.m.

The Ladies Aid Luncheon will be at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Sweet Rose’s Bakehouse. The Ladies Aid Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. the following Tuesday.

Petersville United Methodist — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will use Scripture from Acts 16 for her 9 a.m. Sunday sermon at the church, 2781 N. County Road 500E. The title will be “God’s Calling.” Communion will be served.

The United Methodist Men’s group will meet at 7:15 a.m. Sunday at the church.

The Monday evening Bible study groups will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the homes of Jim and Chris Kimerling and Larry and Connie Nolting. The Sit and Stitch group will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., also at the Nolting home.

The walkers group meets at 9 a.m. Monday and Wednesday at FairOaks Mall.

Choir practice is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, under the direction of Kathy Bush. Prayer Group will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, led by Barb Hedrick.

The trustees have scheduled a work session at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

St. Paul Lutheran — All family and friends are invited to hear confirmands Baylee Byford, Madison Fischer, Hannah Harris, Malerie Hendershot, Riley Hurt, Addison Justis, Chloe Sims and Libby Wischmeier offer their confessions of faith at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the fellowship room at the church, 6045 E. State St. in Columbus. Their confirmation service and first communion will be during the 10:45 a.m. May 8 service.

Music

Old Union United Church of Christ — The Voices Concert will be at 6:30 p.m. May 14 at the church, 12703 North County Road 50W, Edinburgh.

Vernon Baptist — The Living Witness Choir of the Westport Baptist Church and the Vernon Baptist Church Choir will be joining together for their annual Praise Concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Vernon Baptist Church, 155 E. Washington St. in Vernon. The concert will feature both choirs individually, with the combined choir performing several selections as well. The Vernon Baptist Choir is directed by Karen Meeker. The Westport Baptist Living Witness Choir is directed by Deanna McCullough and accompanied by Jennifer Chastain. The concert will be followed by a time of food and fellowship in the church’s Family Life Center.

Events

Fairlawn Presbyterian men’s breakfast — Men of all ages are welcome to attend the Men’s Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. May 14 at the church, 2611 Fairlawn Drive in Columbus.

Flintwood Wesleyan fish fry — The annual Fish Fry Fundraiser is May 14 at the church, 5300 E. 25th St. in Columbus. There will be games, prizes and food. More information will follow. The Kids Jam end-of-year party will be at 5:30 p.m. May 18.

The church will mark its 50th Anniversary June 12. Anyone who has ever attended Flintwood is encouraged to join the celebration. A dinner will follow the service.

North Christian labyrinth walk — The Second Saturday Labyrinth Walk will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 14 in the lower level of the church at 850 Tipton Lane in Columbus. Advocates of labyrinths, circular paths that began some 3,500 years ago, believe those tools can lead people to relaxation, insight and focus.
