High school roundup: North tennis rolls to sweep at Southport

INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbus North girls tennis team wrapped up the top spot in Conference Indiana’s East Division with a 5-0 win at Southport on Friday.

Aubrey Smith blanked Anna Gunderson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Paige Littrell beat Hyani Sui 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Madelyn Sanders was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Camille Khelseau at No. 3 singles for the co-No. 21 Bull Dogs (10-4, 3-0).

Hannah Frey and Hannah Shoemaker downed Aubrey Popovic and Jenna Polly 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Yijiang Zhao and Shweta Sirinivasan coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Abby Dunn and Seng Zanhkung.

Hauser blanks Eastern Hancock

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Hauser breezed past Eastern Hancock without dropping a set Friday.

Maycie Asher beat Kayla Huff 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Alana Owen downed Emiley Carlton 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Madie Sherman topped Taylor Kline 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Abby Johnson and Sarah Tedder were a 7-6, 7-5 winner against Lexi McMahan and Channing Bearhope. The No. 2 doubles team of Natalie Taylor and Tanner Davis posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Olivia Scott and Erin McKeeman.

No. 1 singles victory not enough for Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Despite a three-set victory from Avis McGovern at No. 1 singles, Jennings County suffered a 4-1 defeat against Madison on Friday.

McGovern rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against Anna Burns. Rebecca Driver fell to Rile Boone 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and Stefani Williams lost to Maddie Robinson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Elaine Lykins and Adrianne Garris fell to Annie Marsh and Emma Stacier 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Hailee Harmon and Maddy Hill lost to Sydney Poling and Claire Lostutter 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings boys, girls sweep Big Blue Relays

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County swept its Big Blue Relays on Friday. The Panther boys scored 118 points to 112 for runner-up Bedford North Lawrence, while the Jennings girls scored 146 to the Stars’ 112.

Justine Corya won the girls 100 meters in 12.93 seconds. The Panthers won the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches), high jump (9-0), long jump (30-0), shuttle hurdle relay (43.96), sprint medley relay (1:59.26), 4×800 relay (11:23.16), 4×100 relay (51.81), 4×400 relay (4:24.79) and throwers 4×100 relay (1:00.36).

Aaron Smiley won the boys 110 hurdles in 15.58. Jennings also won the high jump (11-0), shot put (87-1½), shuttle hurdle relay (38.49), distance medley relay (11:21.36), 4×800 relay (8:45.95) and throwers 4×100 relay (52.83).

Pitcher’s 1-hitter sets tone for Edinburgh in win

EDINBURGH — Kyle Armel threw a one-hitter to lead Edinburgh to a 14-0, five-inning win against Indianapolis Howe on Friday.

Kinser Bryant, Tavian Cosby and Zach Murphy all had two hits for the Lancers (4-6).

Red Devils outlast Panthers at St. Annes

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County dropped a 150-164 decision to Jeffersonville on Friday at St. Annes.

Bailey Wilder led the Panthers with a 39. Ian Donnell and Austin Roscoe each shot 41, and Hunter Sporleder and Justin Gasper each shot 43.

BOYS LACROSSE

Olympians split weekend vs. Avon, Chatard

Columbus East beat Avon 21-11 on Friday but fell to Bishop Chatard 13-10 on Saturday.

Kyle Grimm and Luke Fry each scored three goals against the Trojans. Cody Blackburn added two goals, and John Menefee and Wade O’Dell each had one.

Grimm recorded two assists, and Cameron Nelson, Menefee and Blackburn all had one assist. Ric Wooten posted seven saves.

On Friday, Grimm scored seven goals to lead the Olympians against Avon. Blackburn added five goals, while Fry and Andrew Boyer had four apiece.

Jacob Spratley finished with a goal and an assist. Wooton recorded four saves, and Holden Warren posted two saves.
