In Columbus and around the country, many immigrants chose to stay home from work and boycott businesses in an effort to show the economic impact of immigrants and protest proposed laws being debated in Congress that would create tougher immigration laws.

Special Olympics competitions for the disabled at Columbus East High School’s track, the annual Airport Awareness Day at Columbus Municipal Airport and a workout led by fitness guru Richard Simmons at FairOaks Mall were among events and activities around Columbus.

In light voter turnout, with between 8,000 and 9,000 of 27,000 registered voters casting ballots, Democrat Icel “Ike” Deaver and Republican Charles Nolting were chosen to run for Bartholomew County Sheriff.
