FAIRHAVEN, Mass. — A former Fairhaven police officer who was fired after the town said he was under the influence of alcohol on duty has sued the town over his termination.

The New Bedford Standard-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1VboaoX ) 24-year-old Jonathan Alves claimed in the lawsuit with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination that he was terminated on false pretenses. He says he was fired because of alcoholism, which he says is a disability that he’s addressing.

Police Chief Michael Myers wrote that Alves firing came after he showed up late to work and said he was still under the influence of alcohol after a late night out.

Alves says in the lawsuit that the statement is false and he never admitted to anything. Myers declined to comment, citing the ongoing litigation.
