Butler Jackson “Dick” Hayes, 90, of Hope, a former Columbus resident, died at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home.

He was born in Stephens County, Georgia, Jan. 31, 1926, the son of Hoyt and Lillian Walters Hayes. He married Ann Haywood Oct. 31, 1949, in Walhalla, South Carolina; she preceded him in death Aug. 16, 1997.

Dick served in the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines. Along with his wife, they co-owned Hayes Appliance Service. They were one of the founding families of Parkside Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and was known to everyone as the perfect example of a true southern gentleman.

He is survived by sons, Rick (Nancy) Hayes and Michael (Felicia) Hayes both of Columbus; daughter, Cindy Hayes of North Vernon; brothers, James (Ann), John and Dean (Judy) Hayes all of Georgia;  sister, Nancy (Steve) Dennison also of Georgia; grandchildren, Ashley (Josh) Burbrink, Hailey and Jordan Hayes, Andrew Fair and Sarah Staggs.

He was preceded by his parents, wife, and brother, Bill Hayes.

In keeping with his wishes there will be no services. Private inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Our Hospice of Southern Indiana. Online condolences may be sent to the family a www.hathaway-myers.com.
