Joe Bill Whipker, 68, of Columbus, died at 4:12 p.m., June 3, 2016, at I. U. Health University Hospital in Indianapolis.

Joe Bill was born Nov. 28, 1947, in Columbus, the son of Harry and Eileen Hull Whipker and Joann Whipker. He married Donna K. Walters on Oct. 7, 1967. She preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 2014.

Joe Bill served Bartholomew County for 30 years as a deputy sheriff and retired in 2012. He was on the Bartholomew County Council for 12 years and was an active member of the republican party, serving as a precinct committeeman for several years. Though retired, Joe Bill was an active member of the F.O.P. and attended the national conventions and enjoyed participating in the program, “Shop with a COP.” In his leisure time Joe Bill spent time on the river in Madison, traveled, fished and played dominoes. Joe Bill was a member of East Columbus Christian Church.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bridgewater officiating. Calling will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday, June 6, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service time Tuesday. Burial will be at Daugherty Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the F.O.P. Lodge #89, the Sheriff’s Association or East Columbus Christian Church.

Survivors include his father; a son, Kristopher Joseph (Genay) Whipker of Columbus; a daughter, Jenny (Darren) Davis of Columbus; and a granddaughter, Coleen Faye Davis of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his mothers and his wife.

Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
