Former South Bend resident Dorothy L. Powers, 93, of Notre Dame, Indiana, died Tuesday, June 7, 2016, in Dujarie House, following an illness.

Mrs. Powers was born August 9, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Helen (Lindley) and Charles Reis and was a lifetime area resident. On March 25, 1944, in South Bend, she married Edgar C. “Edgie” Powers Jr. who preceded her in death in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her son, Kevin M. Powers in 2004; sister, Marjorie Velte; and stepfather, Archie O. Baker.

She is survived by her daughter, Kim A. Powers (Gene Cavich) of Columbus; daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Powers of South Bend; grandchildren, Sarah J. Johnston (Chad) and Matthew J. Powers (Nora Pixley), both of South Bend; and great-grandchildren, Kevin and Carter Johnston, Evelyn Powers and Jackson Pixley; sister, Jane Parik of Sunnyvale, California; and brother-in-law, James Powers (Marilyn) of Indianapolis.

Dorothy had been employed as an administrative assistant with Bendix Corp. and retired from Holy Cross Health Systems. She was known for many years as an avid tennis player, playing well into her 80s. She loved interior decorating and gardening and volunteered her time with the Hearing and Speech Center and Christ Child Society. She was a member of Ladies of the Elks was a staunch Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan through thick and thin.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Holy Cross Village of Notre Dame as well as the staff of the Center for Hospice Care for wonderful care Dorothy received. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Committal services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service.
